With NYFW coming to an end, Fashionistas in Haiti and the diaspora can prepare for Haiti Fashion Week 2014 (HFW).  This Monday, members of MODAYITI, CHAPE, HAND, and Afro.K held a press conference at Karib Hotel.

HFW will take place October 30th- Nov 2nd at Karibe Hotel in Petion-Ville.

The European Union is once again a partner, with Mexico being this year's guest of honor.  40 designers will preview their "Extravaganza" pieces.  Mr. Jose Luis Alvarado, Ambassador of Mexico, was on hand to discuss the working relationship between the two countries. Recently, a delegation of Haitian designers traveled for an event Mexico hosted on the promotion of textiles.

Another big partner this year is Afro.K.  Myriam Jean Louis, President of AFRO.K announced that they would be conducting the 6th edition of their fashion competition from October 20th- Nov 2 in Haiti featuring local designers.  Winners will be presented during HFW's opening gala.

The week will kick off with a gala complete with cocktail dinner, fashion show, and live Mariachi. During the week, there will be various workshops to participate in, such as How to break into the International Market, as well as shop your favorite designers at the on-sight boutique.

There will be three days of runway shows, with 15 shows a day.  Forty-Five Designers and 45 models, national and international, will participate in showing their interpretation of this year's theme Ma Mode, Mon Patrimoine; ‘My Fashion, My Heritage’.

Event Coordinator, Michel Chataigne announced that 10,000 visitors are expected to attend the event.
As the second edition had stimulated exchanges with international designers, the third edition is the confirmation that Haiti could consider itself as the bastion of Caribbean fashion.” Chataigne

Tickets for the Opening Gala are at 5000 gourdes approx. $105USD and 1500 gourdes per show night, approx $25US.

From the
moment I met Marie Therese Fouchard or 'Tete', as she is most affectionately called, I fell in love with her spirit.  She is a woman with lots of charm, character, class and of course undeniable style.

Tete is one who has paid her dues in the fashion world. She started designing in 1987.  A party girl, Tete, designed clothes for her and friends to go out and look good in.  She was making pieces she believed people wanted to wear.

Haiti soon became confronted with the US embargo, civil and political unrest, and things began to change.  Tete too was affected, and began looking further.  She fondly recalls advise someone very close to her gave,  “Just make what you would wear.”  Those words changed the course of things, and soon embodied with a strong sense of self and a determination to promote Haiti, Rapadou was born.

After many years in the business, Tete says she has found her "place in the sky", and has opened a new boutique.

Located in Les Jardins de Gerard up a cute stairwell, as if perched in a tree house, lies Le Grenier de Rapadou " Rapadou's attic". Overlooking Petion-Ville, Tete has created a little oasis filled with pretty little things.  Bright colored dresses, hand woven bags, beautiful pieces of jewelry accentuate the modish decor.

Being a true Libra, Tete, did not want to just showcase herself.  Le Grenier also carries pieces by other local designers. Tete says she surrounds herself  with things she likes, of good quality, and that compliment her own line's aesthetic.  She wanted to create a place of fashion while promoting local products and Haitian designers.

I was first introduced to the famous Michel Chataigne as a teenager, at the end of one of my summer trips to Haiti. My cousins and I spent most of the summer in our hometown of Port Salut, but of course had to come back to Port-au-Prince to catch our flight home.  "Before we go back to New York, we have to go see Michel", my cousins informed me.  Michel did his magic with my hair, and I became a quick convert, making sure to see him at the end of every trip to Haiti.

Recently, I have become an even bigger fan, but now for his work as a designer.  I had the amazing pleasure of working alongside Mr. Chataigne during Haiti's first ever Fashion Week.  Michel, not only worked on the team that pulled off this amazing show, but he was also in charge of the hair and make-up teams, AND his runway show was the week's most talked about show.
Everything this man touches he excels at!

Michel has long been the go to designer of Haiti's fashion elite and those "in the know", but no one was ready for the looks he launch on the catwalk this Fall.  Michel Chataigne; designer, couturier, now creator of his own print! You heard right, all the patterns on the fabric that Michel uses has been designed and created by him. I was blown away.

I happened to get my hands on one of the most coveted items right off the runway, The Michel Chataigne "It bag".  The bag is made of Mr. Chataigne's signature animal print fabric, in cotton and raw straw.  It has small denim details, making this the ideal bag to either dress up or dress down.  There are side zipper pockets, and a silk interior. ALL MADE IN HAITI!

I've been sporting my It Bag on several meetings while in DC, and due to the extreme interest, Mr. Chataigne is now willing to offer it to the masses.  Please, tell him know what you think right here and now  ** (Secret: there's also another print in the works).  Your feedback would be greatly appreciate!

My friend and amazing photo journalist, Swoan Parker, gives her take on some Haitian designers and Haiti Fashion Week for Reuter's in Fashion forward Haiti.

"For anyone who loves fashion, an announcement of Fashion Week brings to mind runways in New York, Paris, and Milan, but never Haiti.  So when my editor requested that I cover Haiti’s first Fashion Week, I was pretty intrigued."  Swoan Parker http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/2012/12/03/fashion-forward-haiti/

Haiti Fashion Week started off with a Gala of all galas.  Everyone who was anyone was there.  It was an invite only affair, filled with dignitaries, and other honored guest.   Standing room ONLY!

The  Diva Emeline MICHEL, kicked off the evening, and the runway show.  Everyone was up at their feet.  The models, showed off fashions from earlier days.  There were pieces on the runway that were over 70 years old.  I was happy to hear that certain fashion houses, had people who preserved and archived many of these pieces.  It was amazing to see how 70 years later there were pieces that I wanted in my wardrobe right now, no scratch that, right away!

Each designer was asked to have their Muse model the best piece from their collect.  An instant tease, everyone is now looking forward to what's in store for the next three days!

For me the best part of the evening was that the night was dedicated to all the pioneers of the fashion game.  One of the first Haitian International models,  Faïmy Hakime received a plaque in honor of the trails she blazed.  Some other honorees were the first school of fashion in Haiti, and Michel CHATAIGNE for bringing an international standard to the world of cosmetology.

Great start to what looks like what will be a great event.

Stay tuned
