The 71st edition of the Golden Globes
The Golden Globes
is the award show that kicks off the award season. Along with
the upcoming Fashion weeks, this is a Fashionista's favorite time of
year! Before we get to all of that, the main event is to acknowledge the
best of the best in film and television. There were some obvious winners,
as there were some surprise snubs of the night.
"12 Years a
Slave" went
into the 71st Golden Globe Awards with seven nominations, but didn't look like
they would get a one until the last award of the evening. The film won
Best Motion Picture Drama. "American
Hustle" won Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, Best Actress
for Amy Adams and Best
Supporting Actress for Jennifer
Lawrence. The wins thrust the
two films into the top positions for the Academy Awards' Best
Picture honor. The Globes are often seen as an Oscar forecaster. (CNN)
"Gravity" gave Alfonso Cuaron, his first win as Best
Director. The film
"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"
received three nominations, but won for song "Ordinary Love,"
featuring music by Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, Jr. and Brian
Burton, lyrics by Bono. On the TV side,
"Breaking Bad" won for drama series, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"
for comedy series and "Behind the Candelabra" won for miniseries or
TV movie
The dynamic duo, Tina Fey and Amy
Poehler dazzled once again as the evening host. My only complaint, we didn't get
to see enough of them!
"Welcome to the
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Lee Daniels The Butler Golden Globe Awards",
jokes Fey in a nod to "Lee Daniels:' The Butler", which did not
receive ANY nominations at the Golden
Globes. Poehler continues
with, "Welcome to all
the women and gay men watching at home".
Which brings us to why we all really watch the awards anyway…
The red carpet!
Starting off with
a scare, when a sprinkler system went
wrong, the red carpet step and repeat was almost RUINED. Luckily, crew men jumped right in and the crisis was quickly avoided.
Stars began to arrive.
Right out the gate was the
favorite of the night, "12
Years' " Lupita Nyong'o, who wore a dazzling cape-like gown by Ralph
Lauren. Some say it was reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow's white Tom Ford at the 2012 Academy Awards, but I think there is no comparison. Ms. Nyong'o BROUGHT IT!
Some other red carpet reds were
Taylor Swift's dress
featuring a maroon skirt; Drew Barrymore's flowy dress was adorned with reddish
flowers. There were plenty of whites, blacks and even a yellow or two -- but
the reds stood out.
There were also some noticeable baby bumps on the carpet.
