There are some people you just don't want to meet. Not because you don't like them, but quite the contrary, because you admire them so much and are afraid that they will not live up to the image you have of them in your mind. For as long as I can remembered I have adored the infamous celebrity/fashion photographer; Marc Baptiste. He has taken pictures of some of the most beautiful women, and traveled all over the world doing it. His work has been published in Cosmopolitan US, British Cosmo, British Elle, American Elle, Esquire, German Glamour, Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire, Spanish Harpers Bazaar, and Vanity Fair. I remember when I found out that he was Haitian, I was over the moon. After that, every time I looked through those magazines with my girlfriends (till this day), I would mention this fact and beamed with pride as I watched their surprised and impressed reactions. It was like I was pumping up my homeboy, only he didn't even know who I was.
I shared my "healthy" obsession with a friend of mine, one who turned out to be good friends with Marc. I didn't put much stock in it, and just shrugged it off as name dropping. Until one afternoon said friend returns a call to me and towards the end of the call tells me someone wants to speak with me. A male voice gets on the phone and says, "Hi this is Marc Baptiste." I played it cool. Who am I kidding, I go right into, "Oh my God, I'm one of your biggest fans!!" He laughs and we get into a conversation as if we were old friends. I go right into scolding him about getting his butt to Haiti, an order he was too ready to comply with. We get off the phone with him saying several times, "I'm serious, I'm gonna come out there," Well fast forward to Super Bowl Sunday. I'm in town, and am invited to a party which I attend...with MARC BAPTISTE!! Again, it was a natural click as if he was that homeboy that I had spoken of with such pride so many times before. In between traveling the world for work, Marc has written and released three books, all celebrating the beauty of the female form: Beautiful – Nudes by Marc Baptiste, Intimate, and Innocent. He also does so many things to promote and uplift Haiti, a passion that we both share. That night we spoke nothing of these things, we were just homies watching the game and eating Cracker Jacks.
Marc Baptiste has long proven himself as an amazing photographer, but that night and since then, he has proven himself to be and amazing man and friend. It is truly an honor and pleasure knowing him. He far exceeded my expectations.
Stay tuned for and MB X 2 collaboration coming soon! Ssshhhh! ;)
Haiti watch out!!
