Last night was one of my favorite events of Gout et Saveurs: Haiti Food and Spirits Festival, the Cocktail Competition!
This year the 3rd Edition of the competition was held at Les Palms in Petion-Ville.  Hosting the event was radio personality, Carel Pedre and the beautiful Nathania Dominique.  Many of last year’s contenders were present, Karibe Hotel, Best Western as well as some newcomers like, Smokey’s Restaurant.

DJ Gardy and DJ Power Mix entertained guest as they sampled various cocktails and some tasty tapas prepared by Chef Jouvens, Chef Paul Yellin, and Chef Stephane.

As customary, contestants were required to use event sponsor and local liquor, Rhum Barbancourt.  Mixologist were quite creative using local elements such as lime, sugar cane, and pineapple.  Myabel Restaurant even served their Thomazeau cocktail in a coconut shell along with coconut liqueur and almond essence.  Another popular ingredient of the night was Blue Curacao as with the Anacaona from Yuca Restaurant.

The Judges Table

The winners of the night were:

3rd Place: Quartier Latin with the "Port Salut", made with Blue Curacao, lemon juice, pineapple juice, sugar, coconut, and mint leaves.

2nd Place: Best Western with the "Passion Tropical", made of light and dark rhum, vanilla essence, lemon juice, passion fruit, and sugar

The 1st Place Winner: Smokey Restaurant with "The Smokey", made of orange liqueur, lemon juice, passion fruit  juice, and syrop

Admission to the event was $30US. The fee may sound a bit high, but it was one of the least expensive events at the festival. I wouldn't have had a problem if I was able to get anything to eat! The cocktails were great, but with not so much as a few nuts to help, one could only have a few sips. Now I heard that there were tapas being bought around by servers, but I barely saw any. Perhaps the ones that did circle centered only along the "VIP" area. For the most part guest walked to the vendor tables, or could be seen standing along the few tall cocktail tables set up. On the other side of the pool, there were several reserved lounge settings. I mingled among both areas,  and from the information, there were no higher priced tickets, so not sure what got you a reserved seat. No after party for me,  I had to go get some food. Good thing I wasn't driving!

Did you know that there is a competition going on in Haiti called "Kiyes Ki Toro a"?  It's sort of a cross between The Survivor and Iron Man.

Sixteen (16) men and women are competing in a test of "brain versus brawn", having to survive various challenges to see,  Kiyes Ki Toro a (Who is the Toro).

The show is co-hosted by well known Radio/TV personality Carel Pedre and advertising maven, Flo Martin.  The pair have great on-air chemistry, and do a good job engaging viewers and keeping the contestants motivated.

I'm very excited to see that not only a show such as this exist in Haiti, but it's great to see the professionalism and the integrity of the work.  Kudos to the Toro team!

Whether you love sports are not, you must check it out! Tune in to see  Kiyes Ki Toro a
