"A bill was first put forward in 2011 to outlaw counterfeit shopping and punish the purchaser, and New York City Councilwoman Margaret Chin is now making a renewed push to get it passed, reports The Huffington Post. If approved, the purchasing of fake goods would be considered a Class A offence, and could result in a fine of $1,000 (£652), or up to a year in prison - if it's believed that the buyer "knew or should have known" that the product was counterfeit, based on the quality, price and sale location."
